Thanks to modern techniques and advanced technology, root canals are far more comfortable than most people imagine. In fact, the procedure itself is designed to relieve pain, not cause it. This guide walks you through each stage of a root canal so you know exactly what to expect when you visit our office.

Step 1: Your Initial Consultation and Digital Exam

We begin by giving you a thorough exam before starting any treatment.

Digital X-rays and Diagnosis

Our dentist takes digital X-rays to look inside your tooth. This helps find infection, deep decay, or nerve damage. After checking the images, they will explain your condition clearly and answer your questions. You’ll know why a root canal is needed and how it can help with pain.

Step 2: Getting You Comfortable

After your treatment plan is set, making sure you feel comfortable is our main focus.

Local Anesthesia

We will gently numb the area around your tooth. You’ll be awake, but you shouldn’t feel any pain. Most people say this step feels a lot like getting a filling.

Calm and Supportive Care

Our staff will check on you regularly to help you stay relaxed during your visit.

Step 3: Accessing the Tooth

Once the area is numb, the procedure begins.

Small Opening in the Tooth

Our Cinco Ranch dentist makes a small opening at the top of your tooth. This lets them reach the infected pulp inside. The pulp has nerves and blood vessels, which can cause pain if they become infected.

Step 4: Cleaning the Infection

This step removes the source of your pain.

Removing Infected Tissue

Our dentist gently removes the damaged pulp with small tools. This removes bacteria from inside your tooth.

Shaping the Root Canals

Our dentist shapes and cleans the canals to get them ready for filling. This helps prevent future infection and keeps your tooth healthy.

Step 5: Filling and Sealing the Tooth

After cleaning the canals, it’s time to fill them.

Placing a Rubber-Like Material

We use a soft material called gutta-percha to fill the empty space. This seals the canals and keeps bacteria out.

Temporary or Permanent Filling

Often, we put in a temporary filling first. This protects your tooth until the final crown is ready.

Step 6: Adding a Dental Crown

After the root canal, your tooth will need extra support.

Placing a Custom Crown

At this stage, we will fit a custom crown over your tooth. The crown is designed to look natural and blend in with your smile. It also helps protect your tooth from cracks or other damage.

Step 7: Recovery and Aftercare

Most people find that healing after a root canal is simple.

Mild Soreness Is Normal

You might notice some mild tenderness for a few days, but over-the-counter pain medicine usually helps.

Oral Care Tips

Keep brushing and flossing like you normally do, but try not to chew hard foods on that side until your crown is in place.
